Rating of the best magnetic paints for 2022

Magnetic paints are the basic paintwork coating containing the smallest metal particles in its composition, which create the effect of magnetism on the surface painted by them. Such paints can be applied not only on the floor and walls, but also on furniture, thereby creating functional planes on which any light objects can be fixed using a magnet. Most often, the material in question is used in creative / public spaces, children's and educational institutions, as well as in classrooms and offices. In addition, an additional decorative layer or liquid wallpaper can be applied over the magnetic paint layer, which in no way affects the magnetic qualities.

Magnetic paints - general information

Due to its own unique structure, the magnetic coloring material has many applied qualities that significantly expand its functionality. The small fragments of magnetized iron contained in the composition make it possible to fix photographs, calendars, educational posters, etc. on the treated surface, without the use of surface-destroying agents (for example, pushpins). This circumstance will make the painted base more durable, and for a long time it will not even require cosmetic renovation. Nevertheless, to enhance the magnetic qualities, coating in several layers is allowed.

Another basic ingredient of the material under consideration is a coloring water-based component produced on a latex basis.There may also be such a variety as a “magnetic primer”, which serves, first of all, as a reinforcing rather than decorative composition, which, however, does not cancel the effect of magnetism. The primer subspecies became popular when it became necessary to cover slate planes, on which accurate drawings are usually made on a large scale (typical for the automotive, aircraft and shipbuilding industries). Applying images on the slate base with the help of special writing implements, it (the base), due to the functionality of the magnetized inclusions, will reliably and for a long time hold the printed image on its surface, preventing the chalk or the slate from crumbling even under the influence of powerful vibrations.

Main technical parameters

These, without a doubt, include the following:

  • Improved adhesion - strong bonding to most types of processed materials, which indicates a wide range and possibilities of application. A strict condition is a preliminary thorough smoothing of all irregularities on the object being processed.
  • The ability to work with complex surfaces that have increased fragility or porosity (GKL, chipboard, GVL, fiberboard).
  • The complete absence of a synthetic smell characteristic of paint - it does not appear either during the work or upon its completion.
  • Ground variations of magnetized coatings are also recognized as completely environmentally friendly (which is not quite common for this type), and they are allowed to process children's rooms, hospital wards and rooms with a permanent stay of people with respiratory problems (for example, rooms in a special sanatorium).
  • Increased fire resistance - it is achieved due to the absence of powerful polymers in the composition, which, in other coatings, usually provide additional strength and moisture resistance.
  • Exceptional ability - not to accumulate in its layer of harmful radiation emanating from nearby equipment (from an office copier to a widescreen TV).
  • Possibility to cover own layer with additional decorative layer without loss of magnetization effect.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages of the considered paints include:

  • Full environmental friendliness, able to coexist with a sufficiently high functionality, which is rare for modern paintwork materials. Today's realities are such that the paint is either durable, but "poisonous", or "clean", but short-lived and designed exclusively for internal work.
  • Excellent adhesion compatibility not only with traditional substrates, but even with difficult materials, which are most often used for the purpose of creating blackboard display stands.
  • Complete fire safety, which makes it possible to place a board with a similar layer even above a source of open fire.
  • Ease of application - LKM can be applied with a roller, brush and spray gun, and the small iron fragments contained in the composition will not interfere with the proper spraying of the jet even through the finest aerosol mesh of the spray gun.

Of the serious shortcomings, only one can be noted, and it lies in the fact that the metal particles in the structure of the paints in question greatly limit its palette of shades. This material is only available in the following colors:

  • Green;
  • blue;
  • Black;
  • brown;
  • Grey.

That's why the composition is allowed to decorate from above with varnish / paint of a different color.

Areas of use

Magnetic coloring substances open up a huge scope for solving creative problems. Most often, these substances are used:

  • In institutions of the educational sphere, it means the “corridor” from preschool institutions to higher education. The use of standard school boards there no longer allows you to simultaneously depict / place a large amount of information on them in a convenient way. Therefore, it is often necessary to erase the old inscriptions and immediately apply new ones, which takes such valuable study time. A board with a coloring magnetic coating will allow you to quickly place pre-prepared paper posters on it, with a magnetized mount, and also quickly replace them.
  • In kitchen rooms - if you cover a large section of the wall in the kitchen of a large restaurant with such a composition, then you can easily place current orders for cooks, recipes and various reminders and announcements on it. And the full practical heat resistance of the layer does not allow it to collapse under the influence of elevated temperatures characteristic of this room.
  • In entertainment establishments (night clubs, etc.) - an original solution would be to place announcements, time of bar promotions (such as "happy hour") right on the walls. This way you can grab the attention of a larger audience, as opposed to posting such information in front of the entrance on the information stand, where they simply may not notice it.
  • In children's playrooms, lined drawings and even handwritten images can be easily erased from magnetic soil. This is especially true for toddlers.With their manipulations, they will not even be able to physically damage the surface (unless, of course, they use special writing utensils for their visual activity).
  • In the offices - probably the best use of magnetized paint, because a business person always needs to keep especially important information in front of his eyes. Both printed and handwritten charts, various reminders, schemes of action plans and brainstorming are easily placed on the wall.

Self-manufacturing of magnetic coatings

It is quite possible to obtain such a substance at home. This will require the following components:

  • Standard paint of average quality (enamel based on acrylic with a dark color is better);
  • A little dry cement;
  • Powder metal (the finer the better).
  • It is desirable to make a portion of a small volume, for which an ordinary Soviet faceted glass is perfect. 2 tablespoons of metal dust are poured into it, the same amount of dry cement, and the rest of the volume is filled with enamel. Then the whole mass is manually stirred to a homogeneous consistency, after which it is immediately ready for use.

IMPORTANT! It should be noted that any work with metal sand / dust should be carried out strictly in personal protective equipment - goggles and a respirator. Iron dust, even with a slight agitation of the air, easily rises into the air, will settle for a long time, and with a small breath it will easily enter the lungs of a person!

Application features

Preparation of the machined plane

This process is almost similar to what is carried out before working with latex paintwork materials.The surface must be completely free of grease and dirt, free of traces of detergent treatment, and the primary reinforcing components applied on it, such as a primer, must dry completely. If it was supposed to remove the previous layer of paintwork materials or lime, then it must be removed in full. The surface should contain a minimum of cracks and chips, for which it is desirable to grind it with coarse sandpaper. It is always worth remembering that the best adhesion of the substance in question is formed with smoother bases, and strong roughness, on the contrary, reduces adhesion. A sign of obtaining the proper level of smoothness after sanding will be the acquisition by the surface of a characteristic and pronounced matte shade.

Also, the ambient temperature should range from +5 to +23 degrees Celsius with a maximum humidity of 80%. The composition itself should not be heated above +10 degrees Celsius.

Direct dyeing process

Before direct application of paint, it is necessary to check whether there is any sediment in its structure, which may form as a result of long-term storage. If it is present, then to remove it, you just need to carefully move the entire mass. For painting, you can choose a roller, less often you need a brush, and for large areas it is preferable to use an airbrush.

The strongest magnetization effect can be achieved by applying paint in as many as three layers. However, this technology may be needed for intensively and daily used planes (for example, a blackboard), while the consumption will undoubtedly increase and range from 0.5 to 0.7 liters per square meter. It is worth mentioning here that the liquid consistency and the overall quality of the composition used will also affect the flow rate.

In order to obtain maximum magnetic properties, it must be remembered that each subsequent layer is applied only after the previous one has completely dried. Typically, this period is 4 hours. The full use of the painted surface will become possible only after a full day.

IMPORTANT! Complete solidification of the composition occurs after a month - then it will be very difficult to even scrape it off. Care of the treated surface should be done only with a dry brush with soft bristles or a slightly damp cloth.

Difficulties of choice

You need to pay attention to the following points:

  1. Packaging volume - if the container does not exceed the volume of half a liter, then this means that the solution is focused on working on small areas, it is quite possible that it is intended for cosmetic work, so it is unlikely to be suitable for upcoming large-scale staining. The question here is not quality, but the banal risk of overpayment - wholesale large volumes will cost much less.
  2. Drying time - standardly it is 4 hours for one layer. Higher-quality compositions can dry for 5 or 6 hours, but on the other hand, a finishing decorative layer can already be applied to them right away.
  3. Brand quality - the paintwork under consideration is a fairly new product, and some of its samples may not even be certified on the territory of the Russian Federation. Here the choice is made solely at your own peril and risk by each buyer, because, in fairness, it should be noted that the absence of a Russian certificate does not mean poor quality paint.
