Ranking of the best interior paints for 2022

Paints (LKM - paintwork material) for interior decoration can be different in composition, and therefore some of their types are intended for strictly defined surfaces. Before painting, it is necessary to determine exactly under what conditions the future paintwork will be permanently used. Choosing the wrong coloring base will negatively affect the appearance of the finish result, while reducing its performance properties.

Modern compositions of paintwork materials for interior work

The current building materials market can provide the widest range of paints for indoor ceilings, walls and floors. Between themselves, they will differ in the structure of the chemical composition and additional inclusions.

Oily

This type of coating is in the segment of the budget price bracket, as it has an extremely limited operational life. The coloring structure includes various vegetable and mineral oils, and after application, the composition itself begins to oxidize, forming a hardened film. It is this film that is the barrier that prevents air circulation. The layer applied to the surface is characterized by low durability, it is poorly resistant to mechanical damage. As a result, the coating (wherever it is applied - walls, ceiling, floor) will not be of decent quality.

Alkyd

In their consistency, they are somewhat reminiscent of oil samples. They also include soy or flaxseed (i.e.vegetable) oils, and in addition to them there are organic / acid inclusions, the action of which is aimed at increasing the level of wear resistance of the future coating. Therefore, the final layer can be quite called strong enough and possessing a rich color. The latest samples of these coloring substances, when dried, form a highly plastic layer that is resistant to moisture, temperature extremes and can successfully withstand ultraviolet radiation. Alkyd coatings are allowed to be used on walls and floors, but they are not recommended for use in rooms with mass stays of certain groups of people (children and patients with respiratory diseases). This is due to the fact that they have a specific smell, low vapor permeability and a high level of fire hazard.

silicate

These paints are good for decorative interior decoration, because they have excellent chemical and physical properties. However, for the Russian retail market such coatings are rare. Their coloring structure includes special impurities of liquid glass, which provide the applied layer with maximum mechanical strength. The surface painted with them will become particularly resistant to water, will not be susceptible to the formation of fungi and mold, will provide a decent level of breathability, despite the fact that the application of a special protective coating is not required. The disadvantages of silicate substances include the fact that in their structure they contain a considerable part of alkalis, which have a destructive effect when they enter the skin or mucous membranes of a person. During the implementation of painting work with such paintwork materials, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by the master is mandatory.It should be mentioned that only after drying is completed, the surface will become safe for tactile contact with the skin.

Tinting (color change) of silicate paint is allowed, which is done by adding special pigment alkalis to the composition. Again, this process is recommended to be done with PPE, and the range of colors for silicates is not so great. The type of paint in question is excellently applied on various mineralized substrates, for example, on bricks in interior spaces. However, if the substrate has been previously stained with some organic substance, it will need to be cleaned before painting with silicates, otherwise the new finish will not last long. Also, silicates are in very poor contact with polymers and metals. At the same time, it is impossible to apply any other paint to the base painted with silicate coatings. If such a need arises, then you will either have to clean off the old layer or reapply only the silicate composition.

water soluble

These paints represent a very large category of coatings, which are more focused on decorative use. All substances in this category are water-based. It is water that is the component due to the particles of which a dense coloring layer is created. Such mixtures are characterized by the inclusion in the structure of pigments, various additives and fillers responsible for the special properties of the composition.

Acrylic

In such coatings, acrylic resins are taken as the basis. They have a number of positive properties, for example, increased elasticity, good resistance to mechanical stress, successful resistance to moisture and UV rays. Among the disadvantages of these materials for interior decoration, one can mention their inflated price tags.It is worth noting that acrylic samples fit perfectly on OSB panels, and a competent selection of colors will allow you to create an original interior indoors.

latex

The structure of these mixtures includes latex substances, which are able to give the painted base special properties of moisture resistance. Latex paints dry quickly, and the created coating will look great on furniture wallpaper and even on mineralized surfaces. The resulting layer is easy to wash, and it is resistant to mechanical deformation. Latex samples can be called an ideal option for decorating interior walls, because they will mask the smallest building defects, and their extensive range of colors will suit any design solution.

Water emulsion

Their main difference lies in the ease of application. Also, with their help it is convenient to hide construction defects / cracks, they dry quickly. The modern Russian market of building materials can provide a choice of a wide range of such paints with a very wide range of shades and colors. There is only one drawback - low durability, which is associated with poor resistance to moisture.

Water-dispersed

These materials are characterized by special moisture resistance. They fit perfectly on the base, providing it with sufficient vapor permeability. The painted surface becomes more resistant to mechanical deformations and can successfully withstand temperature changes. On sale, this paintwork material can only be found in black or white, but its tinting is possible with the help of a separate addition of special additives. Water-dispersed compositions will perfectly color wood, concrete, brick, while not spreading or cracking.Solvents are not present in their structure, which indicates their safety for humans and the environment.

Butadiene-styrene

A rather rare composition for Russia, however, excellent for interior finishing work. It is characterized by such positive qualities as moisture resistance, the possibility of successful resistance to mechanical stress, vapor permeability. However, this paint is very "afraid" of ultraviolet radiation. The surface painted by it, under the action of direct sunlight, burns out very quickly, losing its original color.

Silicone

They are one of the subspecies of current samples of water-dispersed compositions, which professionals distinguish into a separate category. Silicone paints perfectly cover the surface, successfully mask the slightest building irregularities, dry quickly, and the result of painting is easy to clean and is not “afraid” of water.

Polyurethane

They are made on the basis of polyurethane resins. The necessary components, according to the production technology, are mixed immediately before the start of painting work. The service life of the applied layer can reach 20 years, it can easily withstand excessive mechanical loads, various vibrations and fluctuations, temperature changes and exposure to direct sunlight. However, the cost of this coating is very high.

Features of paints for indoor use

Most of the products under consideration are special solutions with a uniform consistency. These samples can be conditionally divided into two groups: designed exclusively for interior decoration and universal (i.e., involving both outdoor use).The latter are little dependent on operating conditions, but the former must have some mandatory features:

  • Moisture resistance - after the layer has hardened, a particularly strong film should form on the base, which will not let moisture through to the protected base. This type of internal paintwork is more often used for finishing kitchens and bathrooms;
  • Durability - most rooms where interior decoration is required involve the constant presence of many people. From this it is clear that the paint must be resistant to abrasion and be able to maintain its performance properties for a long time. However, it is only expensive compositions of internal coatings that have increased strength;
  • Safety and environmental friendliness - this factor, by and large, should be present in any mixture for internal use. The solution should not release into the environment after drying harmful substances hazardous to human health.

Also, it should be noted that internal coatings can have at least some versatility and be suitable for most surfaces - floors, walls, ceilings. As well as being able to tint (color matching) or be presented on the market in various shades.

Advantages and disadvantages of interior painting

Both the paint and the process itself (together with the result) of finishing interior rooms have the following advantages:

  • Ease of application - all the work does not require any superpowers from the master. Coloring, with sufficient accuracy, will turn out to be visually monolithic due to the processing of a seamless surface;
  • Absence (full or partial) of some harmful factors - ultraviolet almost does not penetrate into enclosed spaces, and some of them are protected from excessive exposure to moisture;
  • Ease of care - the painted surface can be washed with a simple rag soaked in water;
  • A simple renovation - you can refresh the painted layer by simply applying a new paint over the old one (provided that the applied and applied compositions are homogeneous);
  • A wide choice of color palette - the possibility of tinting significantly expands the artistic possibilities of the designer;
  • The use of internal paintwork materials with a specific decorative orientation - the possibility of creating real highly aesthetic works of art in the conditions of a single apartment or a specialized room.

Among the shortcomings, the following factors can be distinguished:

  • Paints for interior work cannot hide too large building cracks;
  • Depending on the composition used, the painted surface can become dirty quickly;
  • Most substrates to be painted will require preliminary preparation, such as leveling and bringing them to the smoothest possible state. If there are a lot of roughness and irregularities on the base, then the material will begin to peel off very quickly;
  • Most of the paintwork samples used for painting the ceiling are weakly able to withstand temperature extremes and the influence of moisture. The paint may begin to peel off, and the base will take on a little presentable appearance.

Difficulties of choice

Before buying paintwork materials for indoor work, you should pay attention to the following points:

  • The general safety of the composition - it should not have a negative impact on human health, especially after the layer has solidified.
  • The presence of restrictions on use - some compositions are directly prohibited from being used in special-purpose rooms.These can be kindergarten rooms and hospital wards, which are not allowed to be painted, for example, with oil compositions, since they will also release toxic substances into the environment upon drying (even in small volumes).
  • Wear resistance - any coloring solution for internal use should be easy to wash after drying and endure wiping with abrasive detergents.
  • Hiding power - this parameter displays the ability of the textured material to cover the previously applied layer. The higher this parameter, the fewer new layers will need to be applied.
  • Resistance to ultraviolet - the parameter indicates the ability of the painted surface to endure exposure to direct sunlight. This quality is especially relevant for the buyer when painting a room located on the sunny side is required.
  • Drying speed and mortar consumption - such parameters affect the total time required for interior decoration. A bona fide manufacturer will always indicate the drying time and the approximate mass consumption per square meter either on the container label or in the accompanying documentation for the material.
  • Color preference - for finishing living rooms, bedrooms, children's rooms, professionals recommend using matte shades. But for bathrooms, kitchens or bathrooms, semi-gloss or completely glossy compositions are more suitable, which are easy to wash with plain water.
  • Consistency - a quality mixture should always have a good jelly-like state (which also applies to samples that are mixed immediately before starting work). Thanks to such an elastic structure, the substance will be easily applied to the base to be painted.
  • The need for surface preparation - usually compositions for interior decoration are not very demanding on this parameter, but it is not worth covering a completely uncleaned surface with paint, because this will only lead to waste of paintwork materials.
  • Finishing protection - some internal coloring materials, especially those that were used in rooms with high traffic or high humidity, will need to be additionally coated with protective substances after drying in order to increase their strength. This includes agents that prevent the formation of mold and fungi, counteracting mechanical deformations and the negative effects of water.
